Pre-test check

Before performing the emissions test, the inspector will do a visual check. If the inspector finds any of the following issues, it must be corrected before the emissions test can continue, as it could lead to injury and/or the test equipment may not work properly:

  • missing catalytic converter and/or gas cap

  • defects in the fuel filler pipe

  • problems with the on-board computer system that would prevent the vehicle from being tested

  • visible smoke coming from the tailpipe

  • any problems the inspector believes would prevent the vehicle from being tested safely

Test types

Depending on the vehicle, the test could involve:

  • an on-board diagnostic (OBD) test (reads emissions information from the vehicle’s computer)
  • a tailpipe test (measures tailpipe emissions)
  • an opacity test (measures smoke density in diesel-fuelled vehicles)

Drive Clean test

  • By law, certain cars, vans, trucks, motorhomes and buses must pass a Drive Clean test before they can be licensed to be driven on Ontario roads.
  • The Drive Clean test determines if your vehicle meets Ontario emissions standards.

Our Technician will perform the test, provide you with test results and inform you if there are any required repairs.

When to get the test

  • Once your vehicle is 7 years old, you need to get the test every 2 years. Larger vehicles (called ‘heavy-duty’ vehicles) require the test every year, once they are 7 years old.

  • The Ministry of Transportation will notify you when your vehicle needs an emissions test, when you receive your registration renewal documents (either online or in the mail).
